The Icon is our state-of-the-art unlimited sailplane designed
and computer-optimized by Joe Wurts for thermal duration and F3J contest
formats. It uses a cruciform tail with flying stab for precise handling
and accurate landings. The F3J Icon took 1st and 2nd places at the 2001
US team selection trials.
The Icon is hand-built in Arizona of the finest composite
materials available. It is delivered "plug-and-play" - completely finished
and ready for radio gear. It comes complete with tubular carbon pushrods,
stab bell crank, rudder post, ballast tube, adjustable tow hook and wing
mounting system all factory-installed. The servo tray is factory-routed
for battery, servos and receiver. Also included are a unique 44 ounce
ballast system, a complete "plug & play" wiring harness, flush-mounted
wing servo covers and all hardware. An experienced pilot can have an
Icon in the air in a matter of hours.
The airfoil for the F3J wing is designated JW-19; it is
8.98% thick with 2.25% camber. The airfoil has "kinks" (not perceptible
by eye) at the flap line such that the stressed surface is optimized
for
both camber and reflex. The airfoil for the stab is the JW-05; it is
symmetrical and 7.5% thick. Wings and stabs are built using molds taken
from CNC machined
masters to assure accuracy. All parts are molded with MGS epoxy, then
post-cured in an oven. All parts are painted in the molds with two-component
acrylic polyurethane paint. Standard colors are white, yellow, orange,
red, dark blue, black, magenta, purple, chartreuse, lime green and forest
green.
The wing is incredibly stiff - easily capable of full-power
winch or hand-tow launches. It is a bolt-on three piece assembly with
rectangular carbon joiners. Wing construction consists of hollow molded
skins using carbon cloth with Airex foam core and a spar system using
high modulus unidirectional carbon spar caps and end-grain balsa sheer
webs. The stab
and rudder are molded with E glass skins and Airex foam cores.
The Icon is available in three different builds with variations. The
parts are all constructed in the same molds, but with differing structures
and weights.
The F3J Icon is engineered for stiffness - a maximum of nine inches
of bend with 200 pounds on the tow hook. The wing uses massive amounts
of high modulus carbon in the spar caps. Flying weight is 76 - 78 ounces
producing a wing loading of 9.5 - 9.8 ounces per square foot.
The Thermal Icon is designed as an all around contest thermal duration
plane. The wing will bend a lot more than the F3J Icon on launch without
danger
of failure. All up weight is 69 - 75 ounces, depending upon the
tail boom lay-up. Wing loading is 8.6 - 9.4 ounces per square foot.
The Icon Light is designed as a light weight contest thermal duration
plane with hard launches restricted to winds below 15 mph. All up weight
is 65 - 67 ounces producing wing loads between 8.1 - 8.4 ounces per square
foot.
